Forces and Motion

Back to Physics home.

Kinematics helped us understand how objects move under the influence of gravity and/or constant acceleration. Forces tell us why objects move. Newton’s Laws of Motion are 3 basic rules that govern the motion of all objects. Below you’ll find links to different pages and documents I’ve created as well as links to videos and other useful resources.

Conceptual Help

Newton’s Laws of Motion Overview– This page lists and describes Newton’s Laws of Motion in detail. It contains many examples that I hope will help you better understand Newton’s Laws.

What is a force?- This page addresses forces in detail and the type of motion you should expect in the presence of a net force.

Friction- This page describes friction in detail.

Problem Solving Help

Problem Solving Step-by-Step: Forces- This page provides a step-by-step outline of how to approach and solve force problems.

Force of Gravity, Normal Force, and Force Down the Plane Calculation- This page should help you master calculating these three forces in any situation.

Force of Friction Calculation-

Sum of Forces Equations- Making a correct “sum of forces” equation is essential to all problem solving in this chapter.

Example Problem 1- A basic (Level 1) force problem solved and annotated.

Example Problem 2- A challenging (Level 2) force problem solved and annotated.

Example Problem 3- A challenging (Level 2) force problem solved and annotated.

Example Problem 4- A very challenging (Level 3) force problem solved and annotated.
